Module 11: Addressing the Reading Deficit Beyond the Primary Grades

Teach students in the upper grades how to decode and learn ways to teach vocabulary in more meaningful ways!

Target Audience:
3rd grade teachers and up, administrators, interventionist, instructional coaches, and special education teachers.

From this module, participants will be able to…

    • Demonstrate syllable awareness and how to use it to decode words.
    • Apply structural analysis skills to determine meaning of words.
    • Explain and practice teaching strategies for each of the generalizations of the advanced phonics continuum.
    • Administer and score a decoding survey to identify the lowest deficit skill.
    • Create a lesson plan that demonstrates explicit phonics instruction.
    • Deliver an explicit vocabulary lesson that stretches beyond the definition level of understanding.
