Science of Reading in the Classroom: Part 5: Internalizing, Annotating, and Elevating HQIM

The Mississippi Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Education and Reading Division of Literacy is inviting district administrators, principals, lead teachers, and instructional coaches (K-5) to attend a 1 day, in person professional development training titled Part 5: Science of Reading Classroom: Internalizing, Annotating, and Elevating HQIM.  Parts 1-4 of the HQIM series guided district leaders through the implementation process of HQIM, assessment and writing, and small group instruction.  As we guide leaders in the shift from lesson plans to lesson preparation,  It is important to understand the importance and process of effective lesson preparation.  This professional development will explore the process of internalization in preparation for teaching a unit,  the science behind lesson preparation vesusu lesson planning, and opportunities to practice internalizing a Unit within a specific curriculum.



Morning Session: 

  • Understand the importance of common planing and collaboration
  • Explore the process of internalization
  • Examine annotation methods, and identify which method works best for your school/district
  • Prepare lessons in a common-planning session using internalization and annotations

Afternoon Session: Curriculum Specific Workshop

*Participants need to bring a teachers' edition and accompanying materials needed to plan. (myView, Wit and Wisdom, Into Reading, CKLA (Core Knowledge language Arts)

  • Understanding the essential HQIM vocabulary
  • Internalize Unit 1 using the Unit Internalization Guide
  • Explore elevation strategies

As we guide leaders in the shift from lesson planning to lesson preparation, it is important to understand the importance and process of effective lesson preparation. This professional development will explore the process of internalization in preparation for teaching a unit, the science behind lesson preparation versus lesson planning, and opportunities to practice internalizing a unit within the district’s HQIM. Please be fully prepared with a 3rd Grade Teacher's Edition for the HQIM you plan to attend.
